Three Sartell authors and a the sole survivor of a Lake Huron shipwreck will be four of the special guests at a Great River Authors Group Book Fair Tuesday, June 26 at the St. Cloud Eagles Club.
The Sartell writers are Barbara Bettenberg, author of “Edgar, the Near-Sighted Eagle,” Dennis Herschbach, author of a new thriller entitled “Convergence at Two Harbors,” and John Roscoe, author of “Legacies of Faith: The Catholic Churches in Stearns County.” All are members of the Great River Authors Group, comprised of about two dozen authors in the greater St. Cloud area who meet and share ideas on their works and how to market them.
The Book Fair will start at 2 p.m. The keynote talk by author Dennis Hale will start at 7 p.m. In Hale’s book, “Shipwrecked: Reflections of the Sole Survivor,” he recounts the harrowing, page-turning story of how he was the only survivor of 29 men after their cargo ship sank in Lake Huron during a violent storm on Lake Huron Nov. 29, 1966. In freezing temperatures, with waves at times as high as 30 feet, Hale and three other men clung to a raft, suffering terror and pain, until one by one the other three men died. When Hale was finally rescued after more than 30 hours of agony, doctors were astonished he survived as long as he did.
