Two Sartell High School seniors have been named National Merit Scholar finalists.
The students are Yash Hindka, son of Chanchal and Dinesh Hindka, and Megan Mechelke, daughter of Kathryn and Mark Mechelke.
Hindka and Mechelke are two of the 15,000 finalists out of 1.6 million students who took the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test in October 2017. They scored high enough to be named semifinalists in the fall of 2018 and completed a rigorous application to be named finalists.
Both students have been very involved in school and community activities.
In addition to serving as a student representative for the school board, Hindka is a member of the Minnesota State AA Knowledge Bowl Championship team, volunteers at the Catholic Charities Food Shelf and achieved a perfect ACT score.
Mechelke achieved Sartell High School varsity letters in Academics, Spring Musical, Fall Play and Knowledge Bowl. She was part of the SHS Music Listening Team that advanced to State in February. She has also volunteered as a Sabre Splash Mentor, for Sabre Splash Advisory Council, ORE/PME Musical in a Week with GREAT Theatre, Tri-County Human Society Event and Office, and the SCSU Chemistry Outreach Program.
National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced between April and July.
