A Dollar General store has opened for business along Sartell’s Riverside Avenue in the same building previously occupied for some years by a Family Dollar store.
That store closed about two years ago.
The new one, Dollar General, is located at 218 Riverside Ave. S., with O’Reilly Auto Parts adjacent to the north and Rotary Park to the south of the store. Its business hours are from 8 a.m.-10 p.m. all seven days of the week.
The Dollar General Corp., headquartered in Goodlettsville, Tenn., owns a chain of nearly 19,000 Dollar General stores in the United States. The discount variety store offers clothing, cleaning supplies, home décor, pet supplies, health and beauty aids, toys, seasonal holiday items and grocery items.
There are about 200 General Dollar stores in Minnesota.
The discount variety stores were founded in 1939 in Scottsville, Ken. by James Luther and his son, Cal. For many years, the stores were called J.L. Turner & Son. In 1955, that name was changed to Dollar General and years later the stores proliferated throughout the nation.
Since 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $216 million in grants, helping more than 15.4 million individuals take their first steps toward literacy and/or continued education.
