(Editor’s note: Fact-checking from several reliable news agencies, including PBS, CNN and NPR have reported baseless claims for the following points made in this letter to editor: FEMA did not block entrances after Hurricane Helene and the Biden administration did not limit aid to $750/person, Minnesota teacher licensing rules passed under Gov. Tim Walz do not enable the state to ban practicing Christians, Jews and Muslims from teaching in our public schools.)

“No, I’m not voting in the election. Who cares? Besides, I don’t like any of them,” she said in response to my question. It wasn’t an uncommon answer to my very informal poll.
A disgusted or “who cares?” attitude prevailed more often than I would have expected in such a contentious time. It was like the effort to get fired up had simply drained away.
It felt like apathy. Yet underneath I sensed helplessness. And that brought me back to “who cares?” Who does care anyway?
Consider this: As Hurricane Helene devastated the eastern states, some cared enough to arrive quickly on the spot to provide aid. Others (from FEMA) were reported to block entrances to the affected areas.
Two people (Donald Trump and Elon Musk) managed to arrive early and in a short time Musk proposed some free Starlink communication. As donations began pouring in from churches and private sources, our government’s initial response was silence. Then the current administration announced FEMA didn’t have enough money for aid (despite the fact $157 million had been sent to Lebanon). Later, Kamala Harris promised $750 per affected person.
Who takes huge risks for change? Donald Trump. And he keeps on after two known assassination attempts. He even returned to Butler, Penn. for a second rally. Who visited our southern border and actually talked to more than one person working on the front lines?
Finally, who cares about the millions of illegals crossing into America – unvetted? And the many children who have undoubtedly suffered before they disappeared? That person cared enough to build a wall. Who was part of the administration that sold the steel meant for that wall as scrap metal?
Who supports religious freedom? Donald Trump certainly did during his presidency. Effective July 2025, Minnesota teacher licensing rules passed under Gov. Tim Walz enable the state to ban practicing Christians, Jews and Muslims from teaching in our public schools.
Yes, who does care? I hope you do . . . and I hope you think deeply about who cares for us. It matters for our future and our freedoms. Above all, don’t believe the lie that your voice doesn’t matter. VOTE!
