St. Joseph American Legion members will honor veterans with a series of events on Memorial Day, May 27.
At 8:45 a.m., Legionnaires, members of Legion Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion will march to the 9 a.m. Service at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
After the service, Legion members families and guests will move to the St. Joseph Cemetery to honor area veterans buried on foreign soil, buried in national cemeteries and in the local cemeteries.
Veterans are honored with flags placed on their graves and their names read while church bells toll. After reading names, a firing squad fires three volleys and “Taps” is played. There will be refreshments at the St. Joseph American Legion Club after the event.
At 11:15 a.m., Legion members and Honor Guard travel to St. John’s Abbey cemetery for a ceremony.
The last event is at 11:55 a.m. when Legion members and Honor Guard visit Yankee Cemetery south of St. Joseph.
During the morning, 514 veterans will be honored.
