Luke Payne of Sartell recently graduated from St. John’s Preparatory School in Collegeville.
Max Reetz, son of Kristine and Steve Reetz of Sartell, recently earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, magna cum laude, from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City, SD.
Magna cum laude represents students with a grade-point average between 3.70-3.89.
Reetz will begin his career in June as a product engineer in renewable energy at 3M in St. Paul, Minn.
Three Sartell students recently graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie, Wis. They are the following: Heather Berg, bachelor’s degree in apparel design and development; Ryan Flynn, bachelor’s degree in engineering technology; and Rachel Granzow, bachelor’s degree in hotel restaurant and tourism.
Leah Gacke of Sartell, recently graduated with an associate’s degree in practical nursing from Minnesota State Community and Technical College in Moorhead.
Adrienne Gefre, daughter of Katie and Brian Gefre of Sartell, earned honorable mention for her junior individual performance in Ministry in the North: a Benedictine Legacy on the Red Lake Reservation, which she performed as part of Minnesota history day at St. John’s Preparatory School, Collegeville. This was Gefre’s first competition in this event. She was mentored by her sixth-grade teacher, Mary Anderson and SJU freshman Billy Mentor.
Two Sartell students from Concordia College in Moorhead are participating in the Spain Summer Study program. Those students are the following: Megan Erkens, daughter of Becky Houle and Don Erkens; and, Benjamin Maurer, son of Lisa and Mike Maurer.
They will spend a month in Sevilla, located in the South of Spain in the Andalucia region. It was founded as the Roman city of Hispalis and later renamed by the Muslims as Ishbiliya. It is about 2,200 years old. After the discovery of the Americas, Sevilla became the economic center of the Spanish Empire. The program will include family stays, excursions and cultural events and a trip to Barcelona.
The programs are designed to enhance learning, and include on-campus courses and an off-campus travel seminar led by Concordia faculty. The courses contain background information necessary to understand and appreciate the travel experience of various countries and academic disciplines.
Three Sartell students from Concordia College in Moorhead are participating in the Summer School in Santorini program. Those students are the following: Adam Flemming, son of Susan and Jeffrey Flemming; Carl Minnerath, son of Sylvia and Dale Minnerath; and, Zachary Zitur, son of Jeanne Cashman.
They will explore one of Greece’s most dramatic landscapes: the volcanic island of Santorini. Destroyed by fire and ash sometime in the second millennium, this jewel of the Aegean now boasts some of the most diverse and beautiful topography, archeology and history in the world. Participants will engage the language, poetry, culture and landscape of this island; to understand the cultural and physical changes that have taken place on it since the Bronze Age.

Stearns Benton Child Care Association hosted their Provider of the Year Banquet May 8, and announced the winner for Stearns County and Benton County. Stearns County Provider of the Year is Lisa Schroers. Benton County Provider of the Year is Melissa Rieland. Lisa has been doing daycare in Sartell for 8 years. She had two of her parents write letters about the wonderful provider that she is. Melissa has been doing daycare in Sauk Rapids for 18 years and she also had two of her parents write letters about how wonderful of a provider she is.
Central Minnesota Arts Board awards project grants to area organizations
At its April meeting, the Central Minnesota Arts Board awarded $151,270 in support of 29 regional arts projects. Three criteria are used in evaluating applications: Artistic quality and merit; ability of the organization to carry out the proposal; and the needs of the community.
Organizations may apply for up to $6,000 with a 30-percent match requirement for any one project or combined projects totaling no more than $6,000 in any one grant round. Organizations may apply for up to $8,000 with a 50-percent match requirement one time in any of the three grant rounds. Funding for these CMAB Grants is provided through an appropriation from the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the state’s general fund, and its Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund created by the Voters of Minnesota.
City of Sartell, $6,000, Music in the Park series of four free outdoor community concerts that feature musicians from the region beginning July 15 through Sept. 1 at Pinecone Central Park in Sartell.
CentraCare Health Foundation, $4,200, to enhance the Recovery Plus Artist In Residency Program with 14 professional artists representing 12 different mediums. All contracted artists live and work in the St. Cloud Area and are chosen for their empathy for the unique needs of persons who suffer with addiction/mental-health conditions and for their community contribution through work and volunteer involvement.
Central Minnesota Youth Orchestra, $6,000, 2015 Fall Semester “Russian Classics” educational program for grade-school-age students to develop musicianship and perform an orchestral concert. Held Aug. 18-Nov. 28. A free public concert will be performed Nov. 21 at St. Cloud State University.
Chamber Music Society of St Cloud, $6,000, Aeolus Quartet concert and community outreach, Sept. 17-19 with several outreach activities in area schools and the community for people of all ages and levels of musical sophistication. The formal concert will be held at the Atonement Lutheran Church in St. Cloud.
College of St. Benedict, $2,347, Dennis Alexander Piano Festival and Competition for 55 pre-college students from local school districts. The festival will feature composer Dennis Alexander, competition, repertoire workshops and group workshop Nov. 21 at the College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University in St. Joseph.
Downtown St. Cloud Art Crawl, $6,000, 2015 Sizzling Summer Art Crawl that will feature more than 50 visual artists exhibiting their work for sale at downtown venues with more than 40 musicians and street performers entertaining Aug. 14 along West St. Germain Street in Downtown St. Cloud.
Great Northern Theatre Company, $6,000, for the production of the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat that will provide the opportunity for 60 adult and 22 youth artists from the community to participate July 30-Aug. 7 at Glanville Smith Auditorium, Rocori High School, Cold Spring, Minn.
Land Of Lakes Choir Boys, $7,300, for a Summer Music Day Camp open to boys ages 8-14 in the community interested in a week-long exploration of music held at Elk River Lutheran Church and a resident camp for current enrollees focused on music and art exploration and team-building exercises held at Timber Bay in Onamia. Camps will take place July 27-Aug. 16.
Millstream Arts Festival, $5,000, outdoor, juried arts festival presenting visual artists and musicians in a family-friendly festival environment Sept. 27 on Minnesota Street in St. Joseph.
Mississippi Strings Camp, $6,000, to promote the continuation of string education in the summer, open to students ages 8-18 ranging from beginner to advanced with the goal of developing skills and inspiring students to continue playing, held June 15-19 at Technical High School in St Cloud.
Munsinger Clemens Botanical Society, $5,500, 2015 Music in the Gardens series of six free music concerts held Sunday afternoons June 14-Aug. 23 and includes music for Art Faire in the Gardens on July 16 and Evening in the Gardens on Aug. 18. All Concerts are held in Munsinger Gardens in St. Cloud.
Paramount Arts Resource Trust, $3,000, Statewide Juried Art Exhibit for artists to compete in a professional and emerging or student category hosted in Gallery Saint Germain, the Paramount Lobbies and Studio C Sept. 14-Oct. 19 and showcased at the annual Gala.

Sherburne County Jail/Advisory Task Force on the Women and Juvenile Female Offender, $8,000, Women’s Writing Program at Sherburne County Jail where participants use creative writing for reflection, understanding and healing that result in professionally published chapbooks that will be be catalogued in the Great River Regional Library system and Elk River Branch collections. The workshop, taught by artists Diego Vazquez Jr. and Marcie Rendon, are held in four quarterly sessions June 1, 2015-April 1, 2016 and offered to women with short average sentences at the Sherburne County Jail.
SOAR Regional Arts, $8,000, for the production of High School Musical co-produced by SOAR Regional Arts Teen Advisory Group at St. Michael High School Performing Arts Center Aug. 6-9. The production will consists of only school-age students 13-18 years of age and offers teens the opportunity to be mentored by professional production staff.
