Due to extreme drought conditions, a more restrictive watering policy was implemented by the City of Sartell as of Aug. 21.
Like other areas of drought-plagued Minnesota, Sartell is experiencing huge increases in the pumping and distribution of water as the seemingly never-ending drought continues.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has recommended tightening water restrictions, and Sartell is listening to DNR guidance and policies.
City officials are hoping that as fall approaches, cooler weather and – possibly – adequate rain will ease or cease the ongoing drought.
The heavy use of city water threatens the city’s water supply as well as public safety – that is, water that might be needed for firefighters to put out fires.
Residents are being asked to honor the two-days-per-week watering policy by doing the following:
Residents in houses with even address numbers (example: 352 Dry Street) should water lawns for up to one hour only in the time frame between 9 p.m. on Monday to 3 a.m. on Tuesday and from 9 p.m. on Thursday to 3 a.m. on Friday.
Residents in houses with odd-numbered addresses (example: 353 Dry Street) should water lawns for up to one hour only between the time frame of from 9 p.m. on Tuesday to 3 a.m. on Wednesday and from 9 p.m. on Friday to 3 a.m. on Saturday.
The DNR also recommends a ban on any non-essential outdoor water use, especially excessive lawn irrigation, power washing and filling of swimming pools.
The city sends a “thank you” to those city-water users who have been following the odd/even irrigation schedule. Due to current conditions, all city water users (residents and businesses) should take these additional steps to help maintain water levels and avoid extreme restrictions. The restrictions will more than likely remain in place through summer’s end. The city will announce further conservation requests and changes to the restrictions.
