Two St. Joseph students were recently commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army after successfully completing the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program and graduating with bachelor’s degrees from the College of St. Benedict, St. Joseph.

They are the following: Kimberly Beltz and Malia Carson.

The new officers will be branched to a specific corps in the Army to serve on active duty or in the Army National Guard or Army Reserve. The lieutenants will attend an officer basic course relating to her particular military occupational specialty/job. Afterward, the officers will complete advanced training by attending basic officer leadership courses for career progression purposes.

The ROTC curriculum prepares students with the tools, training and experiences to help cadets succeed as effective leaders in any competitive environment. Army officers serve as leaders, counselors, strategists and motivators, who lead other soldiers in all situations occurring in ever-changing environments. As trained problem-solvers, key influencers and planners, they are driven to achieve success with their team on every mission.

Both are 2013 graduates, Beltz from White Bear Lake Area High School and Carson from Vilseck High School in Vilseck, Germany.

Local couple donates art collection to the Paramount Center for the Arts

Collecting and appreciating visual art has been a passion for Burt and Cheri Dubow. As their life together evolves they have made a decision to donate a number of pieces from their collection to the Paramount Center for the Arts. The donated work is displayed in the lobby of the Paramount Theatre through July 8.

The works are diverse in their subject matter and media. Some are originals, others prints. The collection includes local artists, past and present such as a few paintings by Bela Petheo and Charles Kapsner. Also, there is a wonderful Agam, a beautiful Margaret Hluch weaving, and an Ainslie Roberts print entitled “Waratah and the Blind Hunter.” A wall-sized Kapsner fresco is also part of the collection which will be permanently mounted at the Paramount soon.

More pieces from the Dubow collection will be presented at a later date in combination with other artists in a specialty exhibit at the Paramount Gallery Saint Germain.
