Members of the St. Joseph Parish Quilt Group gathered at Heritage Hall Monday to put the finishing touches on their masterpiece, the “Bad Habit Brewing” quilt.

The quilt, along with 22 other large quilts and 17 baby quilts, will be up for auction  online this summer. Details of the auction will be announced later.

Sponsored by the Bad Habit Brewing Company in St. Joseph, the cotton quilt is comprised of scores of 4-inch x 4-inch squares with “Bad Habit Brewing” on each of them and logos of the company.

“It’s a very unique quilt,” said Delrose Gillitzer Fischer, who has been a member of the quilt group since its founding 34 years ago.

Representatives of Bad Habit Brewing made a guest appearance during the Monday-morning quilting session.

The St. Joseph Parish Quilt Group, which has 14 members, has been quilting year-round since 1987. Before the pandemic struck, the many quilts would be auctioned in downtown St. Joseph during the Joe-Town Rocks festival. Money raised by the quilt auctions is used for the St. Joseph Catholic Parish activities.

Each year, the quilters choose various “themes” for their creative, hand-stitched quilts – themes such as “Minnesota Twins” and “Minnesota Vikings.” One dazzling, colorful quilt years ago was made up of a man’s collection of old-fashioned neckties.

This year, Quilt Group member Jeny Meyer is coordinating all aspects of the quilting projects.

Check future editions of the St. Joseph Newsleader for more information about the upcoming online quilt auction.
