One sees an immediate difference when entering the re-built St. Joseph Dollar General store.

That difference includes clean, wider aisles plus a larger checkout area with two self checkouts and one operated by a cashier.

During a visit by the Newsleaders to the store, several shoppers were willing to comment about what they have noticed in this new store.

The following are some of those comments:

“There are more products and a larger refrigerator section. Of course it is conveniently located. No more traveling to different towns to find a Dollar General.”

“Again having the store so close to home, and the self-checkout. It is easy to shop after the kids get out of school, or when I have to run in late evening to get dog food. The DG app lets me shop ahead, and their online app coupons save me even more money.”

“This is a similar set-up. It is easy to find things and is even more organized. I really like their decor and home goods. I use a lot of cards and party supplies too. It seems like they carry more items in general.”

One customer said she appreciates how spacious the aisles are and the improved lighting. She said she really appreciates the happier atmosphere and said it’s like people enjoy working here.”

A vendor was willing to comment too.

“The manager,” she said, “really cares and is willing to work and to help the customers and staff.”

A new employee said “The boss is great, the best boss I have worked with. She is easy to talk and work with.” He described the work atmosphere as “friendly, and the co-workers really like being here.”

The original St. Joseph Dollar General opened in December 2019 but burned in October 2022. The St. Joseph city council approved clearing and rebuilding on the same site in early 2023. The store opened again in July, 2023.
