There are some corrections/clarifications needed for a story published in the Oct. 6 Newsleader. The story was headlined as “
In 2010, Joy Baker, that book’s co-writer, began writing a blog about the Jacob Wetterling case. The reason she did so is that she hoped the blog would encourage people to come forward to share what they knew.
During Baker’s research she found a 1987 article describing five attacks on teenage boys in Paynesville. That led Baker to suspect a connection between those attacks and the abduction of Wetterling. She eventually met and got to know of the victims, Jared Scheierl.
Baker did not have a “hunch” about Danny Heinrich, Wetterling’s abductor/killer. But her hunch about a Paynesville connection proved to be true because, as it turned out, Heinrich had previously been arrested in Paynesville nine months before Wetterling’s disappearance. In 2016, Heinrich admitted to the crime (including the assault against Scheierl) and led authorities to where he buried Wetterling’s body, in a field near Paynesville.
In a separate story about a TV Wetterling documentary,, the correct date of the book’s release should have been have been Oct. 17.
