The very first “Joetown Blocks” took place Sunday, June 9 in downtown St. Joseph on Minnesota Street.
The weather was perfect, even though the stiff north breeze made it a bit chilly for the men who got soaked in the dunk tank.
The event was hosted by the St. Joseph Convention and Visitors Bureau. It was meant to celebrate the meaning of “community.” Smiles were seen on faces of all ages because there were activities for all ages to enjoy. A car show, kids’ activities, a farmers’ market, acoustic musicians, a beer garden, a power-wheels derby, a dunk tank and local vendors all added to the festive atmosphere. There was a variety of foods and snacks available.
Joetown Blocks is a smaller version of the big Joetown Rocks concert celebration that takes place every summer on the evening of July 3. That event attracts many people from far and wide. Some have made Joetown Rocks an annual event for their families.

The weather was perfect June 9 for Joetown Blocks events in downtown St. Joseph. People were in good moods as they enjoyed the various activities.

St. Joseph Mayor Rick Schultz peeks into a restored 1948 Ford F-1 pickup. The vehicle, which started out with the Los Angeles Fire Department many years ago, is now owned by Pat and Barb Manuell of St. Joseph.

Simon Lohstreter, 13, and his father, Lance Lohstreter, of Brooklyn Park, are very interested in this Ford Model T. The Lohstreters decided to check out vintage cars after attending a water-safety course in St. Joseph.

This young volunteer decided to increase his odds at the dunk tank. Apparently, he thought he needed a “helping hand” for success. The young man has the ball in his left hand while he presses the target with his right hand, and – splash! – down goes Nate Keller, St. Joseph’s director of community development.
