Members of the St. Joseph Park Board want to revive a city tradition.

Talks are underway to bring back a 5K community race to be held during the weekend of the annual Millstream Arts Festival. John Anderson, chairman of the city’s park board, said the plan is to try to bring the event back this year. The route is still being determined.

“We used to have one about three or four years ago,” Anderson said. “It’s a good community event.”

Anderson said with the draw of Millstream festival-goers, adding the race to the weekend is a way to simply add more events for more people. Anderson is set to meet with members of the St. Joseph Lions Club to see if the group will help out with the event with plans to develop more partnerships to make the event happen.

Thousands visited St. Joseph for the 13th annual Millstream Arts festival Sept. 30. The event that usually lines the sides of Minnesota Street grew so much some artists were also lined up along College Avenue this time. There were more than 50 artists – a lot of them new to the festival. There were also more than 10 food vendors, including a new food offering of  homemade lefse, a Norwegian potato-based flat bread.

As park board members continue to plan for the re-introduction of the 5K, residents and community members are asked to assist by sharing ideas or even volunteering. Anderson said those who are interested in helping with the 5K event can contact him at johnand1951@charter.net.
