Preschoolers at Little Saints Academy used the vehicle of song to travel back in time during their recent spring program May 24. The destination: Broadway.

More than 20 students performed musical classics that include Mary Poppins’s, “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” “Do-Re-Mi” from “The Sound of Music,”  “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” from “The Wizard of Oz,” “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” from “The Lion King,” “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” and the song “Little People” from “Les Miserables.”

“Prepare to be amazed,” Amy Bonfig told the audience as she welcomed guests.

“Amazed” was the appropriate word used by the child care center’s director as the students serenaded the audience, transformed green stability balls into drums and performed solos with the help of hand bells, the piano and harmonica. At times it was hard to believe the harmonious sound booming through the school’s gym was coming from children ages 5 and under. It was. And they were all smiles as they sang and occasionally waved at their parents once they spotted them in the audience.

Music teacher Greta Jarrett was pleased with the performance. Jarrett said the students had been preparing for the show for about a month and a half.

“You never know what to expect at that age,” Jarrett said. “They were all well behaved.”

Students present concerts in the summer, fall and spring. Throughout the school year, they also learn a different language as they explore foreign countries. During the lesson, students learn shapes and colors and perform a lunch concert for their parents singing in the language they are studying at that time, she said.
