Minnesota Reading and Math Corps looking for literacy tutors

St. Cloud has an immediate need for 15 literacy tutors and seven math tutors for the 2016-2017 school year, according to Minnesota Reading Corps and Minnesota Math Corps. Both full and part time tutors are being recruited to begin a year of paid service beginning this fall. By serving with Reading Corps or Math Corps, individuals will join a network of more than 1,400 Corps members helping over 35,000 students statewide. Minnesota Reading Corps and Minnesota Math Corps are statewide initiatives to help every Minnesota student become a successful reader by the end of third grade, and proficient in math by the end of eighth grade.

St. Cloud schools with open tutor positions are:

  • Lincoln Elementary
  • Madison Elementary
  • North Junior High
  • Oak Hill Community School
  • South Junior High
  • Stride Academy Charter School
  • Talahi Community School
  • Westwood Elementary
  • Southside Boys and Girls Club

Tutors are also needed at Kennedy Community School in St. Joseph and Pine Meadow Elementary in Sartell.

Minnesota Reading Corps and Math Corps tutors commit to 11 months of service, during which they earn a living allowance of $544 (full-time) every two weeks and an education award of up to $5,775 to help pay for further education or repay qualified student loans. Tutors 55 or older can gift the education award to their child, grandchild, or foster child. Full-time tutors can also receive health insurance and child care assistance. Literacy and math tutors are fully trained by Reading Corps and Math Corps. Tutor candidates come from a variety of backgrounds, ranging from high school graduates to retirees. Mid-career individuals considering a professional change are also excellent candidates. Parents find serving as a tutor is a great way to support their child’s school. To learn more about Reading Corps or Math Corps, or to apply to serve as a tutor, visit www.MinnesotaReadingCorps.org or www.MinnesotaMathCorps.org, or contact 866-859-2825.
