Melissa Rae Sanger

Norfolk, Virginia

(Editor’s note: Sanger is an official with the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals Foundation, known as PETA.)

Authorities reportedly found nine dead dogs and nine others suffering from extreme neglect at a “home-based dog training and boarding facility” in Mora, Minn. Any such horrifying discovery should remind us we must never entrust animals to just anyone.

Our animal companions depend on us to keep them safe. Do your research: Talk to others who have experience with such places, tour any facility you’re considering as a provider, and check social media and online reviews.

Whether attending training classes, heading to the groomers or visiting the veterinarian, insist on staying with your animals at all times. Reputable professionals should not only allow your involvement, they should encourage it. If you’re met with resistance or secrecy, take it as a warning sign. Leave with your animals, and don’t look back.
