November 10, 2021Monthly Meeting (via Zoom)
“Saving Federalism: Do We Have a Representative Government?”
We will look at how our federal system works, including the U.S. Senate and the presidential selection process, as well as how state legislatures function. The Senate has received scrutiny and criticism for a number of reasons, ranging from how it is constituted to rules allowing the minority party—or even one Senator—to stymie the rule of the majority. The Electoral College and the presidential primary system have their share of critics, too, because our system has the potential to elect a president without a majority of the vote. State legislatures are governed by those who are in the majority, which can lead to partisan agendas and a lopsided ability to remain in power. Considering historical and other factors, would a different voting system be more democratic and representative of the people? What are some possible solutions and roadblocks to change?
