9:00 am: Breakfast Club with Annette Atkins

November 10, 2021

Missing Pieces: Part Two, presented by Annette Atkins

We didn’t finish the conversation about Stearns County’s missing pieces, so Annette is coming back as promised for part two. Please join us as we continue the conversation highlighting area stories about race, racism and the structural obstacles to equity, uncovering the “missing pieces” in the narrative commonly told about St. Cloud’s history.

This month, we will uncover more of the “Missing Pieces” in the narrative we commonly tell about St. Cloud’s history. Atkins, professor emerita of history at the College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University, will highlight the stories about race, racism, and structural obstacles to equity.

Attendance for this event is limited due to COVID-19 space limitations. Reservations are required. Please call the Museum at 320-253-8424 to register. The Breakfast Club program is free for Stearns History Museum members and $7 for nonmembers. Coffee and rolls will be provided.

1:00 pm: “Saving Federalism: Do We Have a Representative Government?” Zoom Meeting

November 10, 2021

Monthly Meeting (via Zoom)

“Saving Federalism: Do We Have a Representative Government?”

We will look at how our federal system works, including the U.S. Senate and the presidential selection process, as well as how state legislatures function. The Senate has received scrutiny and criticism for a number of reasons, ranging from how it is constituted to rules allowing the minority party—or even one Senator—to stymie the rule of the majority. The Electoral College and the presidential primary system have their share of critics, too, because our system has the potential to elect a president without a majority of the vote. State legislatures are governed by those who are in the majority, which can lead to partisan agendas and a lopsided ability to remain in power. Considering historical and other factors, would a different voting system be more democratic and representative of the people? What are some possible solutions and roadblocks to change?
