  • Breakfast Club with Jacob Laxen

    Breakfast Club with Jacob Laxen

    October 13, 2021

Jacob Laxen, a former entertainment and food writer for the St. Cloud Times, will talk about his book, Central Minnesota Beer: A History, at the 9 a.m. Wednesday, October 13, Breakfast Club at the Stearns History Museum.

Beer has been an integral part of Central Minnesota politics, business, and culture for almost two centuries. As a beer enthusiast, Laxen visited Central Minnesota communities in search of good beer and stories. He will share those accounts and the history of brewing in Central Minnesota during his presentation. Laxen covered the food and drink industry for the St. Cloud Times from 2014-16 and later for the Coloradan in Fort Collins, Colo. In addition, he wrote craft and domestic beer pieces for national publications. Laxen moved to radio in 2019, working as a digital managing editor at Townsquare Media in Fort Collins. He now works as a digital campaign manager for Townsquare Ignite.

Attendance for this event is limited to 50 people due to COVID-19 space limitations. Reservations are required and will close at noon Tuesday, October 12. Please call the Museum at 320-253-8424 to register. The Breakfast Club program is free for Stearns History Museum members and $7 for nonmembers. Coffee and donuts will be provided.

    Monthly Meeting (via Zoom)

“Saving Federalism: Do We Have a Representative Government?”

    Wednesday, October 13, 2021, 1:00--3:00 p.m.

We will look at how our federal system works, including the U.S. Senate and the presidential selection process, as well as how state legislatures function. The Senate has received scrutiny and criticism for a number of reasons, ranging from how it is constituted to rules allowing the minority party—or even one Senator—to stymie the rule of the majority. The Electoral College and the presidential primary system have their share of critics, too, because our system has the potential to elect a president without a majority of the vote. State legislatures are governed by those who are in the majority, which can lead to partisan agendas and a lopsided ability to remain in power. Considering historical and other factors, would a different voting system be more democratic and representative of the people? What are some possible solutions and roadblocks to change?
