The city council passed a resolution directing staff to survey land for possible future site for a replacement “Welcome to St. Joseph” sign.
The city had previously contacted Xcel Energy about using a portion of their land in between Old Hwy 52 and CR 2, on the south side of Hwy. 75, and Xcel was open to the idea.
The old sign greeting visitors on the west end of town was torn down the week of March 23. The sign had been on the property between CR 75 and Old Hwy 52, belonging to Mike Deutz, since 1996. The sign was placed into storage.
Mayor Rick Schultz mentioned in the past the city may choose to revamp and relocate all of the welcome signs in the city rather than just moving one sign.
City council members originally worked with multiple groups, including the Lions, to erect signs near the edges of town welcoming visitors.

The city recently authorized a survey of land for a possible new welcome sign for the city. The land to be surveyed belongs to Xcel Energy, and is between Old Hwy 52 and CR 2 on the south side of Hwy 75.
