Parents wait patiently as their child’s name is called. This announcement is the recognition of their student’s hard work and dedication to their education.

It also means they were one of more than 20 recipients of $250 scholarships from the St. Joseph Area Dollars for Scholars program. The program awarded 21 scholarships this year, a total of $5,250. Organizers held a banquet May 10 at the St. Joseph Fire Hall to recognize the area students and share the next step for them.

The Dollars for Scholars program has awarded 508 scholarships since its inception about 17 years ago, Dollars for Scholars Board President Mike Hazen said. Hazen, a St. Joseph resident, said he is impressed by each pool of candidates who apply every year.

“It’s such a neat program,” Hazen said. “I’ve always wanted to do something to help kids go on.”

Hazen said the organization has about $20,000 in an endowment fund and has awarded more than $127,000 in scholarships to date. Local businesses from St. Joseph and surrounding areas donate throughout the year to make the event happen.

In years past students have also held a phone-a-thon to raise funds, organizers said.
