For the third consecutive year, a fundraising event to honor the memory of the late, great cross-country coach Rustie Froemming will take place in Sartell beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2 at Riverview Intermediate School.
A 5K race will begin between Riverview and Sartell Middle School. Participants can just show up and register on the morning of the event. There will be door prizes and T-shirts for sale. Those expected to attend include former cross-country runners, current ones and any other residents who want to participate.
There is a $25 fee for each runner who joins the 5K race, but another “Family Fun” race will be free for participants. Food and refreshments will be served. Participants should gather before or at 9 a.m. in the area behind Riverview school.
The fundraiser will make possible scholarships to graduating seniors each spring and funds for the current year’s Sartell cross-country team.
Sartell Sabre Cross-Country Coach Rustie Froemming, a beloved local legend, died on Sept. 16, 2020.
“This 5K event is more than a race – it’s a reunion, a remembrance and heartfelt thank you to a coach who gave so much, current assistant cross-country coach, Shannan Houghton, told the Newsleaders.
“Coach Froemming’s impact on Sartell athletics and the lives of countless student-athletes is impossible to measure. Known for his dedication, leadership and unwavering encouragement, he shaped not only strong runners but strong individuals. This event brings together alumni, current athletes and community members to celebrate the legacy he left behind.”
Houghton noted Froemming helped instill within runners two frequently shared encouraging quotes:
“Do your best, don’t sweat the rest.”
“Sabre Sharp!”

The late Sabre Cross-Country Coach Rustie Froemming still inspires so many people.
