Magdalene M. ‘Maggie’ Schindler, 93

St. Joseph

March 30, 1931-June 18, 2024

Magdalene M. “Maggie” Schindler, 93, of St. Joseph, died June 18 at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Her funeral was held June 26 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in St. Joseph. The Rev. Greg Miller, OSB, officiated. Burial of the urn was in the St. Joseph Parish Cemetery in St. Joseph.

Schindler was born March 30, 1931 on a farm in St. Wendel Township to Henry and Theresia (Reischl) Schindler, the youngest of eight children. Her father died prior to her birth, causing the family to move from the family farm into St. Joseph. Schindler was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, graduating from the parish grade school in 1945. She then attended and graduated from St. Benedict’s High School in St. Joseph in 1949. Shortly thereafter, she went to Ogden, Utah to work for St. Benedict’s Hospital. She eventually returned to St. Joseph and worked as an administrative assistant at the Stearns County Welfare Office, the St. Cloud Children’s Home and St. John’s University School of Theology.

In her younger years, Schindler was very involved in parish life at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. She was a member of the choir, worked with teenagers in the religious education program, served as stand chair for the annual St. Joseph Fourth of July festivities and served as secretary for the parish council for many years. She was also distinguished as the first female in the Diocese of St. Cloud to serve as a parish trustee. She also enjoyed giving of her time and talents by volunteering for Meals on Wheels. Schindler was a talented artist enjoying crocheting, needle point, counted cross stitch, latch hook, painting and woodcrafts.

Survivors include the following: her nieces and nephew, Jane (Stephen) Kirby Deuterman of Port Angeles, Wash., Carl and Mary (Gary) Johnson of St. Joseph and Susan (Brian) Frericks of Emily; great-nieces and -nephews, Nicole (Aaron) Blackmore, Gregory Kirby, Steven (Jordan) Kirby, Makayla (Jesse) Frericks Holzer and Makenzie Frericks; great-great nieces and nephews, Morgan, Logan and Jackson Blackmore and Sloane Holzer.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Sr. Dalene Schindler, OSB, Sr. Elaine Schindler, OSB, and Sr. Martina Schindler, OSB; brothers, Joseph, John (Evelyn), Alphonse and Albert Schindler; and great-niece Lindsey Johnson.

As she always said, she never considered money the primary source of wealth, but the many wonderful relatives and dear friends one is blessed with throughout one’s lifetime – and considered herself extremely rich and forever grateful.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
