If I were a Democrat I would be embarrassed

America is a free country. We are a nation of laws. Our system is very simple. We freely elect representatives who serve in legislative bodies. They enact the laws which govern our society. Now because we are free people, we can and sometimes do disobey the laws which have been enacted to govern us. That is risky because there is a penalty for breaking the law. We don’t get to pick and choose the laws we must obey or the laws we can break. Our prisons and jails are filled to the brim with individuals who choose to violate the laws enacted by our freely elected representatives.

Sanctuary city San Francisco has decided through their Board of Supervisors to break the laws of this country. They refuse to deport or allow for the deportation of illegal aliens who violate our borders and our laws. One such illegal just recently shot and killed a beautiful young lady who was doing nothing more than enjoying a day with her father. Her name was Kate Steinlen.

In an effort to correct the mess San Francisco has created by their lawlessness, a bill was passed by a bipartisan vote in the House of Representatives calling for defunding all “Sanctuary Cities” and a little add-on known as “Kate’s Law.” Kate’s law would require a mandatory five-year prison sentence for any violent criminal who after having been deported, returns to this country illegally. The killer of Kate Steinlen had been deported five times and was in San Francisco because he knew it was a Sanctuary City.

Who could oppose such a law? Who, as a lawmaker, could oppose the actual enforcement of the laws they themselves passed? Well I’ll tell you who opposed the law. It was the Democrat Senate who stood in the way of this legislation. None other than Sen. Harry Reid, who in my mind is a miserable, sad little man. He took to the floor of the Senate and called the law vile. He said it should be named the “Donald Trump” law. Reid apparently believes we should only obey the laws with which we agree. I think that is the definition of anarchy. I am embarrassed for the Democrats.

At this same legislative session, another opportunity to fix a mess was given to the Democrats. Sadly, they failed. A bill, passed by the House on a bipartisan vote, known as the “VA Accountability Act” was blocked and defeated by the Senate Democrats under the leadership of Old Reid himself. This bill would simply have allowed the VA to fire incompetent employees. Who could oppose that? Well it turns out the labor unions oppose that. They don’t want anybody to have the right to hold an employee accountable for his actions or his competence. And, if the labor unions oppose something, I guess that means the Senate Democrats also oppose it.  You see, the Democrats owe their souls to the labor unions. They are what we call a “special-interest” group. Again, how embarrassing. How embarrassing the Senate Democrats would choose labor unions over our veterans.

You have all heard how the Republicans are the party of “NO.” You have been told ad nauseam, it is the Republicans who stand in the way of progress. Well here clearly is yet another couple of examples of who the real obstructionists are.

Very soon now all of our elected representatives will have to face the voters and explain how they voted on these two laws. You and I will have the right to decide which way they should have voted. If I were a Democrat, I would be embarrassed and I would be concerned.

I am a retired businessman and I was a resident of Sartell for six years before moving to St. Simons Island, Ga to be closer to my grandchildren. I have offered opinion columns in the Newsleaders for the last five or six years. Those columns generally deal with political issues. For additional commentary I post a weekly column at ronscarbro.blogspot.com.
