Daylight Saving Time begins

Daylight Saving Time begins Sunday, March 13 at 2 a.m. Clocks should be moved forward one hour, giving us more daylight in the evening, and less in the morning. Cable boxes, computers, cell phones and other high-tech devices will likely spring forward without you having to do a thing. Other clocks will need to be manually adjusted.

Community Fellowship Free Meal to be held for first time at FUMC

For the first time, First United Methodist Church in Sartell, will serve a community fellowship meal from 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Saturday, March 19 at FUMC, 1107 Pinecone Road S., on METRO bus #32 route. METRO bus #32 stops at the Pinecone Coborn’s every hour, with specific stops at 10:45 a.m., 11:45 a.m., 12:45 p.m., and 1:45 p.m. on Saturdays and hubs out of the Sartell Walmart with hourly connections to Route 31. Please encourage anyone in need to come for the meal. Also, please consider volunteering your time and energy to serve the meal.

Access to food and regular meals can be a challenge, regardless of income, nationality or geography. Since the recession of 2006, we have seen the demand for meals grow. The St. Cloud Community Fellowship Meal program offers a place where hot meals and nutritious food are offered to anyone who walks in the door, no questions asked. First United Methodist Church has been serving the ‘Third Saturday Meal’ since 1990 previously at First Presbyterian church, by purchasing groceries out of church-member donations (not the church budget) and providing the volunteers to cook and serve. For more information, go to http://www.fumcscr.org/community-meal.

SCSU to lead discussion on genital cutting practices

Leading for Change: Ending the practice of genital cutting will be held at noon Wednesday, March 16 in Atwood Theatre at St. Cloud State University. The country of Somalia leads in the number of females who undergo cutting or, called by some activists, female genital mutilation, but women from Somalia are also leading for change in Minnesota. This long-standing ritual has been practiced to keep girls and young women from being sexual outside of the norms of traditional culture, and it has been ardently challenged by women from many cultures. Learn more about the practice, the ban and the solutions from a Somali leader in the movement. Presenter Fartun Weli is a founder and leader in the non-profit organization, *Isuroon, which promotes and advocates empowerment, education, equal opportunity and healthcare for Somali women living outside of Somalia. The noon-hour lecture series put on by the SCSU Women’s Center brings diverse women and programming to the university to cover political, social, legal and economic issues affecting women’s lives. Admission is free and open to the public.

Sen. Franken seeks entrants to poetry contest for students

In recognition of the Month of the Military Child and National Poetry Month in April, U.S. Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) is hosting his fifth annual poetry contest for Minnesota students. The theme of this year’s contest is “Celebrating the Veteran in My Life.”

“There are thousands of students all across Minnesota who have seen or experienced the sacrifices veterans and their families have made for our country,” Franken said. “Some of them are children of current service members, while others know men and women who have served. This poetry contest will allow students to honor those veterans and to put into their own words what those sacrifices have meant to them.”

The contest is open to all students in Minnesota grades K-12, with three age categories: Kindergarten to fifth grade; sixth to eighth grades; and ninth to 12th grades.  Students can celebrate any veteran or active military member, including a relative, family friend or neighbor who has had a positive impact on their lives.

Winners will be chosen in each age category. Those selected will receive an invitation to attend a reception at Franken’s St. Paul office. Guests include Franken; Minnesota Commissioner of Veterans Affairs Larry Shellito; Minnesota Poet Laureate Joyce Sutphen; Minnesota National Guard Maj. Gen. Rick Nash; and Minnesota Education Commissioner Brenda Cassellius.

Top-winning poems in each category will be framed and displayed in Franken’s offices in St. Paul or Washington, D.C. The overall winner in each age group will receive an autographed book by famed Minnesota author Garrison Keillor.

If you or someone you know wishes to participate in Franken’s poetry contest, please submit a poem by April 19 to poetry@franken.senate.gov or by mail to: Office of Sen. Al Franken, c/o ‘Poetry Contest,’ 60 Plato Blvd. E., Suite 220, St. Paul, Minn. 55107

Participants may submit only one poem, no longer than 250 words. Each entry must include the name of the child, the parent/guardian’s name, a phone number and the name of the child’s school. Please clearly indicate the participant’s age category.
