Pinecone Road closure on Saturday, May 28
Pinecone Road from Seventh Street to 40th Street will be completely closed to traffic from 8:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 28, for the Sartell Apple Duathlon. Avoid travel or be prepared to stop on Seventh Street N. and on 2-½ Street between Pinecone and Second Avenue because of cyclists and runners. The Apple Duathlon is a local, nonprofit race whose proceeds are returned to the community through donations to local service agencies and for college scholarships for local students.

Volunteers needed for Apple Duathlon
Support the local race and your community by volunteering to help with the Sartell Apple Duathlon kids’ race on Friday evening, May 27, and with the adult race on Saturday morning, May 28. We need people to staff registration and manage packet pickup, staff food tents and water stations, supervise parking and direct racers and more. Organizations who provide at least eight volunteers may earn $100 for your organization. All volunteers receive a 2016 Apple Duathlon T-shirt. Bring a friend. Kiwanis Walk, Roll on May 28 at Lake George
The Downtown St. Cloud Kiwanis Club will host its second annual Bike, Trike, Walk and Roll Parade at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 28 at Lake George. All children and their families are welcome.
The Kiwanis Club has teamed up with #unitecloud and Orange Oak to promote this event to all families in the St. Cloud area. Promotional flyers will be given out at local schools and put up around town, both in English and Somali, inviting all kids to attend this exciting event with their families. Children are encouraged to decorate their bikes, trikes, scooters or wagons before coming, or they will be able to decorate their ride at the park with decorations provided by the Kiwanis Club. Don’t miss the parade around the lake, where you will get to see all the decorated rides.
Giveaways will include: four bikes, books, bike helmets, beverages, Dilly Bar coupons and more.
Many local organizations join the Kiwanis Club to take place in the event, including Great River Regional Library, Bernick’s, Kids Fighting Hunger, The summer Roll n’ Read Bookmobile, Sartell high school students, VFW Color Guard, Chisel from the Rox, St. Cloud police and fire departments, Mr. Bug, Gold Cross Ambulance, #unitecloud and St. Cloud Somali Youth Organization.

Borrow fishing kits for free
Minnesota state parks make it easy for all residents to participate in the fun of fishing. In addition to stocking Minnesota lakes and streams with fish, the Department of Natural Resources also stocks parks with fishing kits visitors can borrow for free. The fishing kits, which include a pole and tackle, are now available at 36 state parks. Stearns History Museum Children’s Garden Camp
The University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardeners of Stearns County will host a Children’s Garden Camp for children in grades 4-7 from 9 a.m.-noon every Tuesday from June 14-July 26 at the Stearns History Museum. Each week, children will be divided into three groups and rotate between different stations. University of Minnesota Extension Educators, Extension Master Gardeners or Stearns County History Museum employees will lead or assist at each station. Snacks will be provided.

I Can Fish! programs teach fishing skills
For those who lack experience or want to improve their fishing skills, Minnesota state parks provide free I Can Fish! programs throughout the spring and summer. These hands-on learning opportunities cover fish identification, casting, knot-tying and more. Fishing gear is provided for use during the programs and fishing licenses are not required. Experienced anglers demonstrate skills and then give participants plenty of time to practice. Check the online calendar on the DNR website for a complete schedule.

Apply now to hunt elk in Minnesota
Hunters have until Friday, June 17, to apply for one of seven elk licenses offered this year by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
Apply at any DNR license agent, the DNR License Center at 500 Lafayette Road in St. Paul, mndnr.gov/buyalicense or by telephone at 888-665-4236. Hunters may apply individually or in parties of two.
In addition to managing elk populations through hunting, the DNR continues to track 20 adult female elk that were outfitted with tracking collars in early 2016 for a research project that will enhance knowledge of elk and inform elk management in the future.

Country Manor Classic Golf Fundraiser set
Country Manor is hosting its 14th annual Hometown Classic Golf Fundraiser Tournament on Monday, June 20 at Blackberry Ridge Golf Course in Sartell. Volunteers are needed to sit at the sponsor hole, greet golfers, hand out samples or run a game. Dress is golf-course etiquette. Plant a Row, Harvest a Row
Consider planting an extra row in your garden and donating the produce to your local food shelf. Favorites include carrots, beans, beets, kohlrabi, corn, potatoes, cabbage, peppers, onions and asparagus. Any produce that has a longer shelf life is accepted. This is an easy way to help our food shelves during the summer and fall. CentraCare is seeking volunteers to assist with day-to-day operations and sales in the Gift Gallery. All proceeds benefit the St. Cloud Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary-funded programs.
