Thanks to a mother-daughter duo in St. Joseph, a new fabric store in St. Cloud dubbed “29 Stitches” opened in early June.
A long-time fabric-and-crafts store, Joann Fabrics, closed earlier this year, along with its other hundreds of stores throughout the nation due to a bankruptcy filing. Joann’s closing disappointed many in the area who enjoy sewing, knitting, making clothes and who work creatively with a variety of fabrics.
One of those disappointed people was a Joann’s store employee named Jordyn Tomaszewski. One day just months ago, she and her mother, Robin, decided to open their own fabric shop, and that is exactly what they did.
It is located at 18 15th Ave. S. in St. Cloud.
An avid hockey player, Jordyn sported number “29” on her hockey jersey. She decided to use that number in the name of her and her mother’s fabric shop. The word “Stitches” was chosen because of a wound she suffered years ago that required many stitches to close. Thus, that word “Stitches” in the name of the store is a pun that also means the needle stitches used when sewing together fabrics.
29 Stitches offers fabrics of course but also other supplies such as yarn, embroidery thread and a variety of arts-and-crafts supplies.
Just recently, 29 Stitches hired an onsite seamstress who will offer custom fashion designs, costume creations and alterations. More programs, classes and exhibits are being planned for the shop.
A grand opening for 29 Stitches is planned for the near future.
Its temporary store hours are noon-5 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday. Its phone number is 320-292-9047.

These are just a few of the bolts of colorful, stunning fabrics available at “29 Stitches,” a new fabric shop in St. Cloud owned and operated by a mother-daughter duo of St. Joseph.
