Thompson has been the assistant athletic director for marketing and promotions at St. Cloud State University since November 2019. He also recently served as an assistant coach at St. Cloud Technical and Community College.
On July 1, Thompson will take over from Nick Peterson, who has been interim activities director for the 2021-22 school year. Peterson took on the position as interim director when Ryan Hauge resigned in August 2021 to become secondary principal (for grades 6-12) at ROCORI school in Cold Spring. Hauge had been the Sartell-St. Stephen School District’s activities director since 2017.
Thompson has long been involved in athletics as director, coordinator and baseball coach. From 2015 to 2018, he was director of marketing and game-day management, as well as head baseball coach for Lackawanna College in Scranton, Penn.

In addition, he was director of sales and marketing for the St. Cloud River Bats, as well as a senior account executive for the Minnesota Swarm, professional lacrosse.
During his coaching years at SCSU (2012-2015), Thompson helped lead the baseball team to record successes, including its best start year in school history at 23-0. The team then finished that year with a single-season record for wins with 54.5
Thompson mainly worked coaching hitters, outfielders and catchers.
While working at Lackawanna College, he had similar triumphs with its baseball team, the Cyclones. There, Thompson mentored coached and helped oversee the college’s $1 million athletic-program budget.
