Gillian Orth, a Sartell High School senior, won the Grand Prize at the Paramount Center for the Arts’ High School Juried Art Exhibition on March 29 with her piece, He Walks You Home.
Deb Rollings, Gillian’s Advanced Placement art teacher who selected works from four high school students for the competition, said, “it was pretty obvious from when Gillian was a ninth-grader that she was an accomplished student who has talent in the arts.”
Teachers from 16 high schools were able to send up to five students from each school to compete across all media including painting, mixed media and photography.
“Gillian’s piece is well-rounded in its execution. It is beautifully illustrated and it reminds me of children’s books such as “Where the Wild Things Are” and contemporary artists like Julie Buffalohead,” one of the judges wrote.
“In the future, I intend to go to college (either St. Ben’s or Minnesota State, Morris). I hope to learn both psychology and studio art with a double major, and further my skills as a thinker, philosopher, listener, writer and artist,” Gillian said. “I want to be able to positively influence the world in any way I can, whether through books or therapy or artwork, and make others stop and think.”
