Tom Emmer, Bernie Perryman, Aric Putnam and all other elected Minnesota officials need to oppose HF 2802 and SF1827. Both bills remove voter choice from our ballot. This is an anti-democratic bill and the bills’ authors should be ashamed.
It doubles the requirements for a party to become a major party. Not only that, it would take away major-party status from parties that already earned it, except for the DFL and GOP. It’s no surprise the chairs of both the DFL and GOP support it!
In 2022 the consensus message from the DFL was that our democracy is at stake. Yet, now we are witnessing a DFL-controlled legislature propose such a bill which uses their power in an attempt to keep their power and limit voter choice. The GOP, which talked about stolen elections, is now trying to steal the 2024 election.
Our democracy thrives when everyone’s voices are heard and represented on the ballot. A bill such as this prevents other voices and ideas from being heard and represented. The Libertarian Party of Minnesota joins with all other third parties in opposing this legislation so our communities, state and our democracy can continue progressing forward.
