After 22 years, it was a thrill for the Sartell Sabre Wrestling Team to send three of its best to the state tournament. It was the first time since 1990 three wrestling Sabres made the state cut.
In other years, one or two went to state from time to time, but not three.
The last time a Sartell wrestler went to the state tournament was Paul Plombom in 2009.
The three who competed last weekend are Josh Halicke, a senior; Brady Goebel, a junior; and Daniel Vitale, a freshman.
Although the three young men did not place at the meet, their coach, Cody Olson, said he is very proud of them.
“It was exciting,” Olson said. “They wrestled great through the sectionals, so we just knew they’d make it to state. They are really hard-working and dedicated.”
