On April 22, at approximately 4:20 p.m., the Stearns County Emergency Communications Center received a report of a crash with possible injuries at the intersection of CR 133 and 322nd Street in St. Wendel Township.
Stearns County deputies arrived on scene a short time later to find disabling damage to both vehicles involved. Through investigation, deputies learned Stephanie Schmitz, 28, of Melrose, was driving a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox when she was stopped at the stop sign at the intersection of CR 133 and 322nd Street. There were vehicles in the turn lane to turn eastbound on 322nd Street and Schmitz advanced through the stop sign. When she did so, a 2015 Chrysler 200, driven by Verona Otten, 54, of Royalton, was traveling northbound on CR 133 in the straight lane when it struck Schmitz’s vehicle.
Otten was assessed for minor injuries and was transported by Mayo Ambulance from the scene. Both drivers were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.
The Stearn County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the St. Joseph Fire Department, St. Joseph Police Department and Mayo Ambulance.
