New program to support leadership development for minorities, call for nominations for inaugural class
The Jugaad Leadership Program seeks to provide Central Minnesota’s minority community with the knowledge, skills and resources necessary to become effective leaders at the grassroots level. The program is accepting nominations for participation in the introductory class and self-nominations are encouraged.
“Jugaad” is a Hindi and Punjabi word that means “innovation.” Innovation is found in how the program
was developed for minorities by a group of local leaders whose faces reflect the area’s growing diversity.
“We hope this program will inspire participants to take a more active role in creating positive social change within the Central Minnesota community,” said Eunice Adjei-Bosompem, one of the program’s founding board members who helped develop the leadership series. Adjei-Bosompem was recently named one of St. Cloud Time’s 5 Under 40 award winners for her work in helping minorities and educating people on minority issues.
Businesses and organizations may nominate individuals to participate in the program. Self-nominations are also accepted. Those interested in participating in the program must complete an application. Selected participants will meet monthly March-August, with a graduation ceremony in September. Applications are due Friday, Feb. 12. The program planning committee will review the applications and notify those selected by the end of the month. The first class is scheduled for Saturday, March 26.
For a copy of the application and more information contact the Jugaad Leadership Program via mail P.O. Box 2041, St. Cloud, Minn. 56302, email [email protected] or phone 320-310.2246.

Starting a business guide now available
The 2016 edition of A Guide to Starting a Business in Minnesota is now available from the Small Business Assistance Office at the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development in St. Paul. The popular guide, which is now in its 34th edition and free of charge, provides a concise summary of the major issues faced by anyone starting a business in Minnesota.
“To best prepare business owners for the constantly evolving entrepreneurial environment, we continually update and expand the guide’s content,” said DEED Commissioner Katie Clark Sieben. “The 34th edition is a comprehensive and timely approach to planning, forming and running a business. Business owners and entrepreneurs will find expanded sections on business entity choice, changes in employment law and unemployment regulation, financing and taxation in the new edition.”
The guide includes information on the newly revised Limited Liability Company Act, which changes Minnesota’s current corporation-based model to a partnership model found in about 38 other states. The new model provides flexibility in areas like the standards of conduct required of Limited Liability Company members, managers and governors.
This edition contains three major sections:
- Narrative text;
- Expanded Resource Directory, including addresses and telephone numbers of organizations referenced in the text; and
- Directory of Licenses and Permits, which lists business licenses and permits required by the state of Minnesota, the state agency that issues or administers the license or permit, and a phone number for obtaining more information.
Free copies of A Guide to Starting a Business in Minnesota can be obtained in hard copy or on CD-ROM from the DEED Small Business Assistance Office, First National Bank Building, 332 Minnesota St., Suite E200, St. Paul, Minn. 55101-1351. Phone 651-259-7476 or 1-800-310-8323.
The guide also can be found on the DEED website.
