REGULAR SCHOOL BOARD MEETING

SARTELL-ST. STEPHEN PUBLIC SCHOOLS

INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT NO 748

SEPT. 17, 2018

DISTRICT SERVICE CENTER BOARD ROOM

The regular school board meeting of Independent School District 748 was called to order at 6:33 p.m. by Chair Jason Nies. Members present: Nies; Mary McCabe, vice chair; Pamela Raden, clerk; Jeremy Snoberger, treasurer; Lesa Kramer, director; Patrick Marushin, director; and Jeff Schwiebert, superintendent. Members absent: none.

A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Snoberger to APPROVE THE AGENDA WITH THE FOLLOWING AMENDMENTS: add to Leaves of Absence; Larissa Pettit. All in favor. Motion carried.

A motion was made by Kramer and seconded by Snoberger to APPROVE CONSENT ITEMS A-C AS PRESENTED BELOW. All in favor. Motion carried.

Student Representative Report: Lauren Lindmeier

  • Lindmeier reported on happenings around the district. All buildings have had a great start to the year. At Oak Ridge and Pine Meadow elementary schools, students have started Homecoming Week events including walk-a-thons at both schools. Juniors and seniors will join their elementary classmates during the walk. The Middle School will be having its first ever all-school student pep fest for homecoming, along with some dress-up days and a float in the parade. The Student Council will have the year’s first activity night on Sept. 28. The High School started the year with Sabre Splash and introduced students to the new Sabre Strong Matrix. All the fall sports teams had an amazing start this season. Homecoming events include the outdoor carnival, parade, homecoming dance and football game. Student Council has chosen the Minnesota ALS Foundation as this year’s fundraiser.

Construction Manager Report on Building Process:

  • Construction Manager Lee Gruen reported the irrigation system continues to work well with the athletic fields and the site fields have begun “greening.” He anticipates the first mow in the next few weeks. Exterior framing is done and will be waterproofed and sealed before winter. The interior drywall will start tomorrow with the music classrooms then move to the administrative and special-education areas. The project remains on schedule.

Superintendent Report: Jeff Schwiebert, superintendent

  • Schwiebert reported the roadwork near the site is continuing and the city has an anticipated completion date in the middle of October. The rust-removing filtration system with the two ponds at the new site has worked great. Congratulations to Janagan Ramanathan, a junior at the high school who attained a perfect ACT score and Mohannad Alkhatib, Yash Hindka, Kristin Martens, Megan Mechelke and Cindy Zhang who were commended in the National Merit Scholar Program, with Hindka and Mechelke being finalists. Lastly, Brandon Nordhues was named Outstanding Young Choral Director from the American Choral Directors Association of Minnesota.

School Board Committee Report:

  • Treasurer Snoberger reported on the recent Finance Committee meeting.
  • Director Kramer reported on the recent Drug-Free Coalition meeting.
  • Chair Nies reported positive progress with current negotiations with the MSEA Paraprofessional unit, the next meeting is set for Oct. 2.

Enrollment Report:

  • Superintendent Schwiebert reported on the current 2018-2019 enrollment numbers for each school.

Assessment Results / Building Goals Report:

  • District Assessment Coordinator Marie Pangerl reported on the 2017-18 Assessment Results. Assistant Superintendent of Learning Services Kay Nelson and Building Principal and Early Childhood Coordinator Michele Rogers reported on building goals for 2018-19.

New Continuing Contract Report:

  • Director of Human Resources Krista Durrwachter reported on certified staff members who have obtained Continuing Contract status in the district beginning this school year.

A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Marushin to APPROVE RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING ENTRY INTO MINNESOTA TRUST JOINT-POWERS AGREEMENT. All in favor. Motion carried.

A motion was made by Raden and seconded by Marushin to APPROVE OFFICIAL REVISIONS TO POLICIES 404, 418, 419, 420, 424 AND 427. All in favor. Motion carried.

A motion was made by Kramer and seconded by Snoberger to APPROVE THE PINECONE CENTRAL PARK SOCCER FIELD LEASE AGREEMENT AND THE PINECONE CENTRAL PARK ST. CLOUD ORTHOPEDICS FIELD LEASE AGREEMENT. All in favor. Motion carried.

A motion was made by Snoberger and seconded by Marushin to APPROVE THE CERTIFICATION OF THE MAXIMUM AMOUNT FOR THE PROPOSED 2018/PAYABLE 2019 LEVY AS PRESENTED. All in favor. Motion carried.

Schedule Work Session and Committee Meetings:

  • Future Board Meeting – 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15, 2018 at the District Service Center

Official Review of Policies:

The Board had the official second reading of proposed policy 722.

Committees

  • Committee assignments for 2018 were reviewed.

A motion to ADJOURN THE MEETING AT 8:32 p.m. was made by Marushin and seconded by Raden. All in favor. Motion carried.
