Luke Loso, son of Patty and Neil Loso of St. Joseph, is studying in Austria during fall semester 2014 through the Office for Education Abroad at the College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University. Loso is a junior physics major at SJU.

The primary objectives of the Austria program are the acquisition of German language skills and an appreciation of the Austrian culture. Located in Salzburg, students take advantage of topics pertaining to both Eastern and Western Europe. The seminar courses are taught in English. Students live with other international students in university housing. Several excursions throughout the region are included with the program to explore Austria, Germany and the rest of Europe. Lisa Ohm, professor of German at CSB and SJU, is the director of the program for fall 2014.

CSB and SJU are ranked No. 2 nationally among baccalaureate institutions with students who participate in mid-length study-abroad programs according to Open Doors 2013, the annual report on international education published by the Institute of International Education. The two schools, which share the No. 2 spot with Colgate University, had 360 students study abroad on mid-length programs during the 2011-12 school year, the latest year measured by IIE.

Before graduating, 63 percent of CSB students and 48 percent of SJU students will participate in a study-abroad program. There are 19 semester-long programs administered by CSB and SJU, including 16 faculty-led programs located in 15 countries on six continents.
