“What do you think of the Verso paper mill closing forever?”

“It’s really sad the mill is closing. The loss of jobs is very bad and I really do feel for those people who will lose their jobs because of it. Many people have had the experience of losing a job. And not only that, but it is a huge part of the city’s history and it has been there for so long, and now it will be gone.”

“It is really sad they won’t be reopening the paper mill. I feel it could really hurt the economy.”

“I didn’t really know much about the paper mill, and I just heard on the radio it was not going to reopen. That’s really sad because a lot of people will lose their jobs.”

“It really isn’t helpful for the economy for the paper mill to close down, but then again there is the point of view from the company’s stance because safety and business are also important to consider. Injuries can be an issue, and safety for companies like that is very important.”

“My first worry would be jobs. Another would be the paper mill employs many people and what with people using less paper because of computers, those people are out of work, and that is a lot of people earning less and even spending less in the city.”

Dennis Dalman

Dalman was born and raised in South St. Cloud, graduated from St. Cloud Tech High School, then graduated from St. Cloud State University with a degree in English (emphasis on American and British literature) and mass communications (emphasis on print journalism). He studied in London, England for a year (1980-81) where he concentrated on British literature, political science, the history of Great Britain and wrote a book-length study of the British writer V.S. Naipaul. Dalman has been a reporter and weekly columnist for more than 30 years and worked for 16 of those years for the Alexandria Echo Press.
