The Record was honored with 12 awards, including first place for “General Excellence,” Feb. 1 at the Minnesota News Association’s “collegiate division” of the Better Newspaper Contest.
The Record is the official newspaper of the College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University.
Several writers and photographers won in multiple categories. Photographer Capri Potter, for instance, won four awards for his photos.
The following is a list of the awards the staff of The Record brought home.
General Excellence. First Place.
Columnist. Second Place for Ugbad Abdi.
News Photo: Second place for Kate Fenske, third place for Capri Potter.
Sports Photo: First place and third place, both Capri Potter.
Photo Story: Second place for four photographers: Kelly Kieser, Eileen Otto, Capri Potter and Molly Pults.
Business Story: First place for Jacob Gathje, second place for Kelly Kieser.
Local Breaking News Story: Third place for Jacob Gathje.
Arts and Entertainment Story: First place for Amelia Kahlhamer.
Human-Interest Story: Second place for Hailey Johnson and Caitlin Salfer.
The Record has been the official student newspaper of St. John’s University since 1888 and has been the official newspaper of both St. John’s University and the College of St. Benedict since 2001. Its goal is “to inform, enlighten, entertain and engage the communities of the College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University through local news, arts, entertainment, sports news and campus opinions.”
The editor-in-chief of The Record is Landon Peterson, a senior from Minneapolis who is majoring in political science and minoring in both peace studies and English on the pre-law track. He started as a news writer in the spring of his freshman year and moved to opinion/editorial editor in the fall of 2021.
On campus, Peterson also serves as a student coordinator at the McCarthy Center, works as an athletic media-relations assistant and is a member of the SJU baseball team.
