Diego Vincent DeVargas, 81, died Nov, 15 in Sartell. Born with an insatiable curiosity and a zest for life, DeVargas’s journey was marked by a profound commitment to learning and community engagement. He led a fulfilling career as an insurance broker, where his integrity and dedication were well respected.
De Vargas attended Sacred Heart High School in Napa, Calif., and furthered his academic pursuits by graduating from St. Mary’s College in Moraga, Calif. with a triple major in philosophy, theology and history, fostering a lifelong passion for knowledge. This passion was evident in his personal hobbies, which included hiking in the majestic mountains of California during his younger years, volunteering, reading extensively and collecting knowledge on a wide array of subjects.
He met his wife, Dianne, at St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Co. in St. Paul in 1968, and they were married in 1969 at St. Francis Cabrini in Minneapolis. They celebrated 55 years of marriage together.
A true community pillar, DeVargas was heavily involved in local activities and the political process. His contributions were also spiritual, serving as a fourth-degree Knight of Columbus, which underscored his commitment to faith and service. Those who knew DeVargas will fondly remember his unremitting sense of humor and outgoing personality, traits that made him a beloved figure in every circle he was part of.
DeVargas relocated to Minnesota 12 years ago to support his wife and mother-in-law, illustrating his deep family commitment.
Survivors include the following: his devoted wife, four loving children, five grandchildren, and three sisters. He was preceded in death by his parents.
His life was a testament to the power of community, knowledge and laughter, and he will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate to know him.
A celebration of DeVargas’s life was held Dec. 5 at the Church of St Joseph.
