Sartell Fire Chief Peter Kedrowski announced to the city council Feb. 27 that he has received a $325,000 FEMA grant to purchase a new water-carrying fire truck.
The council voted to approve acceptance of the grant. Kedrowski said a condition of the grant is the city would be expected to contribute a minimum of $16,274 toward the cost of the truck.
Kedrowski applied for the grant more than a year ago and found out on Feb. 24 the department has been awarded the grant.
The new truck would replace a current truck that is 38 years old. The down side, Kedrowski added, is prices of fire-department equipment has “gone through the roof,” with increased prices of 20 percent or more.
“A new truck is definitely needed,” said council member Tim Elness. “A truck that’s 38 years old needs to head on down the road (be replaced) and this (grant) is a great way to do that.”
Mayor Ryan Fitzthum agreed.
“It’s much needed,” he said.
Kedrowski will seek out estimates on the price of a truck and share that information with the city council soon.
