Eleven-year-old Carter Halstrom of Sartell placed second in the 11-16 overall category of the Kids Sartell Apple Duathlon that took place May 22, the night before the adult Apple Duathlon (see related story).
Halstrom crossed the finish line with a time of 22:11:94. The overall winner was Jack Hennen, 14, of Cambridge, with a time of 20:40:83. Forty-one children participated in the older kids’ race, with all of them running a half mile, then biking 4.5 miles, then running again for another half mile.
None of the participants was in the 15 or 16 age group. All were 11-14.
Two other Sartell competitors made the overall top 10, with Ingrid Buiceag-Arama, 12, earning fourth place; and Shane Corbett, 13, getting 10th place.
In the younger kids’ race (ages 6-10), the overall winner was Ty Zack, 10, of St. Joseph with a time of 14:18:95. Nolan Smith of Sartell taking second place, 14:29:40. Other Sartell children who finished in the top 10 overall were Johnny Nemeth, 9, fourth place; and Dylan Simones, 10, fifth place.
In the younger category, 138 children ran a third of a mile, biked for 2.6 miles, then ran again for another third of a mile.
There was a separate category just for 6-year-old children, who did a shortened race on the grounds of Pine Meadow Elementary School. The three winners of that race were Ryan Karls of St. Cloud (17:05:06), Samuel Thompson of Sartell (17:31:43) and Chase Wheeler of Rice (19:45:44).
There were also winners for each age and gender category in both races.
Of the nearly 200 children who participated in the races, almost half of them were Sartell children.
