Donald Trump’s disastrous performance at the Sept. 10 debate was so bad it was not only embarrassing to watch but in some ways ironically comical.
Ironically comical because he and legions of fans practically celebrated the disastrous debate performance of President Joe Biden. True, Biden stumbled verbally, looking baffled and clueless (almost catatonic at times). It was virtual proof that he is too old to be re-elected, said many people, including me (much as I’ve admired him).
It took weeks of nudging to convince Biden to quit the race. He did. And now, maybe it’s time for another “old man” to quit, the mentally unhinged narcissist Donald Trump, 78, who if elected would be the oldest man in presidential history at the start of a presidential term.
Don’t waste time arguing with diehard Trumpites. They will say they love Trump because he’s a “strong man” (yes, if they mean autocrat/dictator) who dares to “tell it like it is.” In fact, he most often tells it “like it isn’t.” They will say he’s a “great businessman.” (Great? With four major bankruptcies and not paying many contractors, among his other crooked schemes?)
Trump fans list his accomplishments as keeping inflation down, affordable gas and groceries and extending “The Wall” at the border. Immigrants, Trump says, are fiends let out of prisons and asylums in their home countries so they can all wreak murder and mayhem on Americans. And, he adds, take our “Black jobs.”
In fact, Trump’s biggest “accomplishment” was wheedling a gigantic tax break for the super rich ($3 trillion over 10 years). During a celebrity dinner at Mar-a-Lago, he crowed to his wealthy guests, “Hey, you guys, I just saved you a lot of money!”
Meantime, Trump has been demonizing all immigrants, claiming they will poison “American” blood, not to mention eating our pets. Hitler did the same in his vicious rantings against Jews.
Yes, we do need comprehensive immigration reform. Republicans and Democrats agreed months ago on a bill to tighten restrictions. But Trump “decreed” to top Republican leaders they must not pass that bill because it might lessen his chances for the Presidency.
The following are just some of the ludicrous lies Trump spewed at the debate: that in some states just-born babies can be legally “executed,” that Democrats are trying to get illegal immigrants to vote, that Harris was the “Border Czar,” that there were no casualties in Afghanistan when he was president, (NOT).
His Whopper Lie of the Night was his empty bragging (lying) when he blustered, “I had a choice to make: Do I save the Affordable Care Act to make it as good as it can be or do I let it rot? And I saved it!”
In fact, he and most Republicans in Congress tried repeatedly to get rid of the ACA. In 2015, he promised, if elected, he would replace the ACA with the greatest of all health systems in the history of the world. At the debate, when asked just what HIS great health plan would entail, he offered the feeble evasion that he has “concepts of a plan.”
At the debate he stood there rambling on with disconnected thoughts. He kept squinting, pouting, sneering, leering with a kind of impotent anger erupting, especially when insisting his rally crowd sizes were the “biggest in political history.”
Trump is infamous for projecting his shortcomings and flaws onto others. He called Harris “dumb as a rock.” Well at the debate, that “dumb rock” vividly showed who the real “dumb rock’ on that stage was/is: Donald J. Trump.
My readers well know how I have long despised and warned against Trump. Fine, don’t agree with me; don’t read me. But maybe you should start listening to his many former Cabinet members and former good Republicans who are giving five-alarm warnings that he is unfit (and scarily dangerous) to be President.
Hey, Old Man Trump, time to quit.
