(from news release)
On the morning of Nov. 8, a handgun was found in the locker of a student at Kennedy Community School in St. Joseph.
St. Cloud Area School District 742 Superintendent Laurie Putnam contacted via email the parents of students at Kennedy Community School to keep them apprised of the situation.
The following information is from Putnam’s notifications:
The locker was searched because of an “unrelated inquiry.”
The gun was not loaded. The student who placed the gun there was contacted and was found to have no ammunition (bullets) in his possession, and no ammunition was found in the school. The student has been expelled as required by state law and school policy. It was determined there was no danger to anyone in the school.
Law enforcement was notified immediately, and some of them – school resource officers – were already on site doing customary school patrol. They quickly determined there was no threat to the school community and that the student did not intend to do any harm.
Other students, Putnam wrote, were not informed of the situation because the concern was contained swiftly and discreetly so that learning in the school continued uninterrupted.
More updated notices were sent to parents on Nov. 10 and 11.
Putnam praised the “consistent, daily support from the St. Joseph Police Department.”
As of Newsleaders press deadline (Nov. 11), Putnam had scheduled a meeting for Nov. 12 at Kennedy Community School so she and concerned parents could discuss their concerns.
