Cold Spring to hold mental health event

Let the Sun Shine Run/Walk is gearing up for its second annual event at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 28 at St. Boniface Church in Cold Spring. This event was created in memory of Jonathon Robbins who ended his own pain after being diagnosed with schizophrenia and depression. There is a 2.2-mile run/walk and a .4-mile Penguin Trot for the kids.

It is the goal of Jonathon’s family and friends to hold an event that not only helps end stigma associated with mental health issues, but also raises much needed research dollars into these conditions. All proceeds will be donated to the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation. They are the world’s leading donor-supported organization dedicated to finding the causes, improved treatments and cures for psychiatric illnesses. They fund research into schizophrenia and depression as well as many other illnesses including, but not limited to bipolar disorder, autism, suicide, ADHD, Alzheimer’s disease, PTSD, anxiety, OCD, eating disorders and Parkinson’s disease.

This event will not be officially timed as we want every possible dollar going to research. There will be a timing clock at the finish line for those runners wanting to monitor their time.

So many of us have been touched by these issues in one way or another, so we hope we will again receive the amazing support we were shown last year. Last year, despite the rainy day, we were able to donate more than $14,000! One of the dollars we raise could be the one that funds a cure.

The event starts at 9 a.m. at St. Boniface Church. Registration received on or before April 1st is $15 for the 2.2 mile run/walk and $10 for the kids Penguin Trot. This price includes a T-shirt.  Registrations received after this date or race-day registration will be $20 and $12 respectively and we will not be able to guarantee a t-shirt.  This event will not be officially timed as we want every possible dollar going to research.  There will be a timing clock at the finish line for those runners wanting to monitor their time.
