There was a conspicuous sad absence during the St. Stephen Firefighters’ 75th anniversary celebration Oct. 12 – Jason Trobec, a firefighter and father of four who died Sept. 21 in an ATV accident.
Trobec was a 19-year member of the St. Stephen Fire & Rescue Department.
At the event in Lions Park, Jason’s name appeared frequently among groups of people in conversation – people noting how sad it was he could not be there, how tragic it was he died so young – age 47 just days away from his next birthday.
Trobec, a Rice resident, and wife Gretchen are the parents of four children and one recently born granddaughter. David Trobec, Jason’s brother, is a 25-year member of the St. Stephen Fire Department; and their father Ray is a retired firefighter.
A Sartell High School graduate, Trobec was employed as a project manager for Mortenson Construction. He was actively involved with youth ministry, construction, mixed martial arts, self-defense, hunting, fishing, hiking, camping and ATV riding.
Trobec’s’ obituary states that “he was known for his kindness, goofiness, joyful smile and warm hugs he brought to those around him. His love for family, friends, and faith was evident in all he did.”
A funeral service was held Sept. 28 at Westwood Community Church, St. Cloud.
