‘Explorer Program’ accepts applications
The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office is now accepting applications from young people between the ages of 15-21 who are interested in exploring careers within the public-safety realm, such as law enforcement, dispatch and corrections.
The Explorer Program started in 1976 and has been a very successful program that provides training and guiding youth toward a career in public safety. Explorers learn procedures from everyday law enforcement scenarios, report writing, defensive tactics and arrest protocol. Explorers are also taught cardiopulmonary resuscitation and basic first aid. They learn how to dispatch and what it is like to work in a jail setting.
Explorer Program members volunteer at community events by providing security, first aid and traffic control. They are also allowed to participate in ride-alongs with officers and sit-alongs with dispatchers. The group meets on a weekly basis during the school year and periodically throughout the summer months.
For more information, interested young people should email SheriffExplorer@stearnscountymn.gov.
Campaign signs illegal in right-of-way
Stearns County would like to remind property owners that placement of campaign signs and other unauthorized signs or objects in highway rights-of-way is illegal. In addition, campaign signs may not be placed on private property outside of the right-of-way limits without land owner’s consent.
Highway rights-of-way typically include the driving lanes, inside and outside shoulders, ditches and sight corners at intersections.
Crews will remove any unlawfully placed signs and impound them at one of the county’s local maintenance garages. County staff will hold the signs at the garage for a period of 30 days. During that time the owners may come to claim the signs.
Violation of this law is a misdemeanor. Civil penalties also may apply if the placement of such material contributes to a motor-vehicle crash and injures a person or damages a motor vehicle that runs off the road.
