School District Superintendent
As I reflect on my first 100 days as the superintendent of Sartell-St. Stephen schools, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to serve in such a vibrant and committed community.
My journey began with a commitment to having 100 meetings to focus on listening and learning about the concerns and aspirations of the many individuals who live in and work with our district. From teachers, administrators and non-licensed staff to parents, business owners, students and community leaders, each conversation has provided me with deeper insights into what makes Sartell-St. Stephen a great place for education.
Celebrating strengths
The theme during my first 100 meetings was our community’s commitment to education. From members of the Sartell Senior Connection sharing their experiences establishing this school district in the 1960s to families who just moved to the area, the overwhelming message is we have an abundance of strengths to celebrate including:
- An incredible staff dedicated to student success
Teachers, administrators and non-licensed staff go above and beyond to ensure our students are supported in their learning and personal growth. Community members highlighted the professionalism and commitment of our staff and recognized the tremendous efforts made to foster an environment where students thrive both academically and socially. - The district’s tradition of excellence
Parents and business leaders are particularly pleased with our district’s achievement of being in the top 6 percent in the state for reading and math proficiency. Our approach ensures resources are used effectively to support student success. - Preparing students for life after graduation
Our facilities provide students with updated learning environments. Students have the opportunity to explore a variety of activities and athletics. Our Career and Technical Education programs continue to grow and offer hands-on learning opportunities that foster creativity, problem-solving and innovation.
Areas for growth
While we have many strengths to celebrate, feedback has highlighted the importance of ensuring transparency and accountability. The two most frequently raised concerns were:
- A desire for clearer communication with the need for consistent updates regarding district initiatives and decisions.
- The air quality of Riverview Intermediate School (the original high school built in 1969).
By fostering an open dialogue and providing regular, straightforward updates, we can build trust within our community and ensure everyone feels informed and engaged in our educational journey.
Moving forward
I set the goal of having 100 meetings during my first 100 days to hear from our neighbors, families and coworkers. Based on those conversations, my goals are to stay connected by being present in our school buildings and activities, attending local events, celebrating the good work being done and engaging in meaningful conversations that bring positivity to our schools and to our community.
As superintendent, I am committed to strengthening relationships with staff, students and families alike. Together, we will provide the very best educational environment for every student in Sartell-St. Stephen schools.
