Council ‘discord’ story ignored toxic environment

Sartell

I’m writing to express my disappointment with the Dec. 1 article about the city council’s special meeting. I couldn’t help but feel it missed the mark on several crucial points.

First and foremost, it overlooked the very reason for the workshop’s inception — not mere “discord,” but a toxic work environment perpetuated by Ryan Fitzthum and Jed Meyer, exemplified by Meyer’s recent email insults to Jill Smith, which has driven several city leaders to the brink of resignation and instilled among city staff a palpable fear of retaliation. The extent of this toxicity is such that the city attorney had to be consulted, yet employee apprehension remains unabated, and Fitzthum and Meyer have yet to implement any meaningful change.

The story also fails to acknowledge Fitzthum’s attempt to brush aside Meyer’s misconduct (and says nothing about Meyer’s documented attempts to suppress evidence of his unethical actions in the public record). Fitzthum’s refusal to acknowledge these allegations’ severity or hold Meyer accountable, his unwavering support of Meyer, and his willingness to deflect blame onto the victim demonstrates a blatant disregard for staff well-being, the integrity of the council and, by extension, the city’s trust.

Instead of shielding an aggressor, Fitzthum should be prioritizing the safety of all city employees (not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because it’s required by his position). His actions, coupled with Meyer’s misconduct, have not only failed to protect Smith, but have sent a clear message that such behavior is tolerated, if not encouraged, within the council.

To omit these crucial points from your article is a disservice to the public.

It’s been time for a while now to hold our leaders accountable and demand the leadership we deserve. This accountability hinges on having reliable news sources that inform the public truthfully and accurately. Your article fell short of that standard.

I urge you to reconsider your stance on this matter and provide a more comprehensive and honest account of the situation.
