I read the editorial of Janagan Ramanathan entitled “Trump’s inability to recognize Harris’s mixed heritage demonstrates stupidity” in the Aug. 16 edition of this paper. Well written. Keep it up.
I would add to his comments. I would rather characterize Trump’s remarks in regard to race as not “stupid” (though they certainly are) but rather quite intentional. The man is either a dedicated white supremacist or intentionally panders to that crowd. The whole idea of what he says in that regard is not to allege some confusion about Vice President Harris’ race. It is to remind his base that she is not Caucasian. This is consistent with his promotion of the idea that Barack Obama was not a U.S. citizen.
As for myself, I am saddened, not so much by Trump himself but by the hate he has brought out in this country. Trump is not the problem. He’s a symptom. A whole lot of folks get aroused by racial hatred and Trump just fans the flames. This stuff won’t stop until well-meaning people rise up to identify and reject it.
