Several candidates are vying for election to the St. Joseph City Council come November.
There are three seats up for election in the city of St. Joseph – the two-year mayoral post and two four-year council positions.
As of 5 p.m. Tuesday Aug. 14, five people filed to fill two open council seats. The council seats are held by Renee Symanietz and Bob Loso.
Incumbent council member Bob Loso filed to retain his seat Aug. 14. Loso joins the list of contenders that include incumbent Symanietz and newcomers Thomas Gustafson, Matt Killiam, and Troy Goracke, who filed July 31. Symanietz filed for re-election Aug. 2.
Symanietz has served on the St. Joseph City Council since 2004 and was re-elected in 2008. Loso served on the city council from 1990 to 2002. He took a break, then was also re-elected in 2008 and ran for mayor in 2010.
St. Joseph Mayor Rick Schultz filed Aug. 9 to retain his seat. Schultz will face Jennifer Irene Lieser in the November election. Lieser filed for office Tuesday Aug. 14. Schultz was elected in the November 2010 election. Election Day is Nov. 6. Questions about the election process can be directed to city hall at 320-363-7201.
