A Sartell man died during a construction accident in Bismarck, N.D. Sunday, Sept. 9.
Lucas J. Volker, 36, was killed when a water pipe was being lowered into a trench. At the time, a backhoe slipped and rotated to the place where Volker was standing, crushing his chest and abdomen, according to the “Bismarck Tribune.”
The accident happened at 1:15 p.m. Volker was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Volker was working for S.J. Louis Construction of Rockville. The project in Bismarck is a new $16-million water-intake system.
The incident is under investigation and has been forwarded to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
Volkers funeral was held in Rochester, and he was buried with military honors. Born in Winona, Volker served in the U.S. Army after high-school graduation. He married Sarah Wuertz in Albany in 2004. Among his survivors are his wife and two sons, Jacob and Thomas Volker.
